Log Partitioning
A paper I wrote describing log partitioning strategies used in Tandems (now Compaqs) transaction management software. I did all the writing for this document; I listed the co-authors because they participated in the design, implementation and/or performance evaluation of the software described in the document.
Marichal vs. Gibson
An email debate between me and Chuck Shaeffer. I have never met Chuck personally, but we have a mutual friend, Mike Mulhern, who asked for opinions regarding The Sporting News rankings of the top 100 players of all time. Chuck and I both have passionate opinions about baseball. The excerpts presented here cover our Marichal vs. Gibson email debate.
Foul Ball Souvenir
Although this might seem like another baseball-related writing sample, its actually a coming of age story.
Diplomacy Results
I occasionally host Diplomacy games and write up a narrative summary of each game. For those not familiar with Diplomacy, it is a World War I simulation board game in which players make alliances and try to control over half the cities (military posts) of Europe. The term wicked witch used throughout the summary refers to the countries England and Turkey. Placed in relatively safe corners of the board, these countries can stay alive almost indefinitely and stab adjacent countries with impunity. I have therefore developed a philosophy of never allying with any wicked witch. |
